Why LSU Perio ?

The LSU Residency in Periodontics is one of the finest in the country and provides a very strong clinical and didactic program.

Program highlights include:

• Opportunity to perform more surgical procedures than many other national programs.
• A near 100 % pass rate on the American Board of Periodontology’s Diplomate Exam on the first attempt due to our extensive literature training program.
• One of the nation’s only residency program training students in Periodontal microsurgery.  Each resident participates in formal classroom training each year practicing bench top procedures. The residents are encouraged to complete multiple procedures on their patients in the surgical clinic.
Sedation training. During their LSU Periodontics training, residents receive strong clinical and didactic instruction in IV sedation, fulfilling all ADA national recommendations to receive an IV sedation certificate upon graduation. As part of their IV sedation training, residents rotate through the University Medical Hospital Department of Anesthesiology and complete a minimum of 20 clinical cases in the Periodontics Department.

Visit our Resident Gallery to see the examples of surgical procedures and research conducted by our past residents. Also, visit our Newsletter Page, which highlights resident and faculty activities in years prior.

We offer a full dedicated course on practice management in our Residents Only Section which is unique among advanced education programs in Periodontics.

Clinical training includes oral medicine, oral pathology, orofacial pain, periodontal microsurgery, traditional periodontal surgical techniques, periodontal practice management and in multidisciplinary aspects, such as periodontics-prosthetics, periodontics-endodontics, advanced dental implantology.

The LSU Perio Residency represents one of the best tuition values for this type of training in the country.

“My 3 years in The Advanced Education Program in Periodontics LSUSD were unforgettable. All of our residents were able to experience ample surgical opportunities and we learned so much from our phenomenal faculty. We received a great foundation in periodontics, from classic and implant literature to hands-on lunch & learns and so much more. My co-residents and I worked together as a team to help facilitate the learning process. We also experienced a lot of New Orleans together outside of residency.  LSU periodontics gave me a great education and true lifelong friends.

New Orleans is now like home to me. There is not a thing that I won’t miss about this place. The laissez-faire vibe, the music, the authenticity of the people, the culture, and the endless number of restaurants to try, all make this city incomparable to others.  It is truly a unique place and a great place to call home for the duration of the residency program.”  – Dr. Brook Thibodeaux, LSU Perio grad, 2024
