Show ‘N Tell

Dr. John M. Tsourounakis
Lecture Overview
Predictable results tend to have one thing in common: Identifying the final outcome. In this presentation, planning starts with facially generated treatment planning, and functional requirements to define the restorative endpoint. Once that “future result” is clear, digital workflow is utilized to identify the most appropriate pathway, anticipate limitations, and translate the plan into predictable steps, for different clinical scenarios; exploring possibilities for both multi-implant restorations in the partially edentulous arch, and full-arch rehabilitation for the failing dentition and the edentulous patient.
From that foundation, the session follows a practical sequence from diagnosis and case selection to digital planning, guided surgical execution, and provisionalization. Participants will learn how to reverse-engineer implant positions based on prosthetic parameters from the final restoration, select components and materials that support passivity and retrievability, and design restorations that improve hygiene access and protect peri-implant tissues over time. Throughout, emphasis is placed on efficient team and lab communication so that the digital plan is not just a concept, but a repeatable clinical workflow that provides predictable outcomes.
Educational Objectives
By the end of this lecture, participants will be able to:
• Apply a facially driven, outcome-based diagnostic and planning sequence to determine treatment indications and identify limitations for multiple implant restorations.
• Use digital workflows to visualize the final outcome first and translate that plan to a predictable surgical execution.
• Select prosthetic designs, components, and materials appropriate for multi-implant and full-arch cases, with attention to passivity, retrievability, and esthetics.
• Utilize the different workflows, including digital surgical planning, guided implant placement, and provisionalization, aiming to simplify complexity by minimizing surgical time, improve predictability and support long-term functional and biologic outcomes.
Our Speaker
Dr. John M. Tsourounakis graduated from Aristotle University in Greece with the degree of Doctor of Dental Surgery in 2008. He completed his Masters Degree in Health Care Management from the University of New Orleans, College of Business, in 2011. He obtained his specialty Certificate in Periodontics in 2012, and in 2013 he completed a postgraduate Fellowship in Dental Implantology, from Louisiana State University, School of Dentistry in New Orleans. Dr. Tsourounakis maintains a private practice at Southwest Specialty Group, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and is a clinical instructor at the graduate periodontics program of University of Manitoba, College of Dentistry. He is a Diplomate of the American board of
Periodontology and a Fellow of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada. We are very pleased to welcome Dr. Tsourounakis back to LSU Perio and get a glimpse of his beautiful work.

The Show ‘N Tell event is underwritten by the R. Jack and Mary Louise Cassingham Endowed Chair in Periodontics.
The chair was established in 2003 two years before Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans and the LSU school of dentistry. Because of Dr. Jack and Mary Louise Cassingham’s love and devotion to each other and their family as well as Dr. Cassingham’s lifelong dedication to dentistry, their family chose to fund the endowment in their honor. Dr. Gerald Evans, head of periodontics department, currently holds the Cassingham Chair.
In 1974 Dr. Cassingham helped launch the LSUSD Postdoctoral Program in Periodontics. He taught periodontics at LSUSD for 20 years and received the distinguished clinician award in 1987, all while maintaining his periodontics practice in the LSUSD Faculty Practice. Upon retirement in 1994, he was appointed Professor Emeritus to LSUSD. Mrs. Cassingham attended Loyola University School of law where she graduated law review. She worked as a law clerk with the Louisiana Supreme Court for 10 years. Dr. Cassingham passed away in 2007.
Show ‘N Tell Is an annual event hosted by the LSU School of Dentistry (LSUSD) Department of Periodontics. The event couples a morning lecture given by a noteworthy speaker followed by resident and fellow case presentations.
